As regular readers know, I proudly serve on the committee of the Inkwell Awards, a non-profit organization devoted to recognizing the best ink artists in comics and promoting the craft of inking and educating the general public.
The Inkwells also have a wonderful annual exercise/fundraiser called The Joe Sinnott Challenge, named after the living legend and namesake of their Hall Of Fame Award. (If you just arrived on earth and don’t know Joe, learn and enjoy.)
How it works is this: Joe pencils a couple characters from his popular past–usually one is pencilled tightly and one loosely (known as a “rough”)–and various ink artists are invited to embellish/finish one or both. The pieces are then shipped to Joe who graciously signs every one of them and they’re auctioned off on eBay to raise operational funds for the Inkwells.
The best part is that each year, all are collected into a lovely softcover book which is sold for a donation, available on the site’s store or at any convention where the Inkwell Awards are set up (usually on the East Coast). It’s a wonderful study in the craft of inking, and a perfect way to show how much inkers bring to the table other than “tracing.”
The latest tome is now available! The characters featured are the Silver Surfer and The Thing. Artists include Mark McKenna, Neil Vokes, Trevor Von Eden, Bob Wiacek, Joe Rubenstein, Pablo Marcos, yours truly and many others.
There’s both a regular edition and a special, ultra-limited signed/numbered edition. See the Inkwell store for more details and ordering information.
