“Commissions and Themes: What Should I Get?”

Since the focus of this (awesome) site is (awesome) commissions, I thought I’d focus on some ideas for same. Over the years on the Yahoo! group to which I belong, several collectors have posted themed commissions. Having a theme is a great way to build your collection, unify it and popularize it. The theme becomes a thread that permeates the collection which in turn makes it wonderful conversation fodder and also gives it future display…

Artists Are Now Laughing Matter!

To paraphrase Monty Python: And now for something completely goofy. Everybody loves artist jokes, right? Of course you do. Other than the first and last ones, which are altered from “classic” advertising jokes, all are from my funny bone-head. So if you pass them on, and feel free to do so, just blame them on me so you don’t get ostracized. Or stoned. Or stoned by ostriches. MeBoard panels2-200.jpg ¨ CAPTION: All art on this…

“Are You Avatarted?” Part Two of Two: This ain’t no Star Wars, this ain’t no disco…

Last time I talked about AVATAR’s 3-D ambitions and why I think the whole 3-D trend is a rip-off and act of desperation on the part of the studios to get you into the theater and away from your TV. One of the most frequent threads that shows up, usually a couple or more times a year, is about rights. No, it has nothing to do…

Writing vs Art?

Let’s get right into it… So here’s a question I hear debated all the time: Which is more important in comics, story or art? I can answer that in one word: WRONG! The phrasing isn’t correct. You see, the art is PART of the story. That’s why art in comics is also called “storytelling” and artists are often called “storytellers.” You simply cannot read the story in a comic book (or “graphic novel” if you…

A Picture’s Worth…

Welcome to my Wednesday’s Heroes Art Blog. Number 1: “A Picture’s Worth” Don’t be intimidated by the title: I don’t plan on writing 1,000 words each blog! (I get paid more to draw stuff.) It’s more symbolic than literal. I’ll shoot for half that, give or take a hundred or more.
