Here is a Batman collage I am working on. It is roughly 17 x 20 inches and in graphite. Even though I love the subjects of my commissions I wanted to do something on the side for just me. By that I mean just design something for fun and then when it is all finished I will be putting it up for sale.

I wanted to do a collage of all of my favorite Batman characters. I was thinking back to an art project I did in college, just a simple project, I can’t really remember the parameters. Anyway I went home and did a huge collage of all my favorite astronomy subjects and scientists. It was such that the piece could be turned on any side and viewed. It was very organic and i loved doing it. I would show it but i have a habit of throwing away my work every couple of years (I am trying to break myself of that habit).

I thought to do this in that viewing at all angles sort of way but i thought it would show better this way.

I am doing this in between my regular commissions, so it might take awhile.

Thanks for looking.

Absolutely spectacular, Eric! (I’d say “Holy Moley” but that’s another character, and I refuse to rehash any cliches from the TV show by using any other “holy” superlative.)

The downside of the Net is that it’s difficult to appreciate the scope of the work on my small monitor but hopefully Craig will get a nice print of it when finished to include in his presentation portfolio when he scours the convention circuit for us…haha!

What I find disturbing, however, is that you tend to discard your work every few years?! I didn’t think that was possible for artists. (Hopefully you’re not like Michelangelo who burned all his drawings.) I am the exact opposite–still have stuff in my closet from my teenage years! (Even the fanzines and 50-print run comics I published when I was 12 and 13.) I had to get rid of some school stuff when we moved out of state and I thought *that* was difficult. I can’t imagine dumping more, but I really should because I could use the room and I certainly won’t be using the old stuff anyway. (What am I going to do with storyboard pencils for commercials from five to ten years ago?) Perhaps it’s due to my youthful dreaming of the retrospective that would one day be published, but reality is setting in rapidly and it’s time to clean house.

All I ask is that the next time you purge, at least give it to Craig to sell first (or me to steal from)! :-)

Keep us posted on the progress of this amazing piece.

    Best,
    Mike

Thanks, Mike. I have made myself stop throwing stuff out. It was just a bad habit.
    Take care my friend.

I am relieved to hear that you no longer throw out old material Eric.

    I find that somewhat sacriligeous.

This is a great place to visit Eric.
