This week we have a special “Top 10” featuring Tom Field’s favorite Gene Colan covers. Tom Field wrote the book on Gene Colan – literally! His book ‘Secrets in the Shadows‘ was published by TwoMorrows in 2005 and is a must read for any Gene Colan fan. Far more than a collection of great Colan images (which the book is full of), you come away from reading it as though you know Gene personally. Spring the extra few bucks for the hardcover edition as it has some great extras.
Let’s get right to it. I’ve included both the published cover and the original artwork where I could.
Iron Man #1 – One of the best covers ever, in my opinion. Wish I’d seen that one beckoning from the spinner rack back in ’68.
Captain Marvel #1 – the first piece of original art I ever saw, ’cause one of my buddies owned this piece for decades.
Daredevil #38 – That DD/Doom image is amazing.
Iron Man & Subby #1 – two great tastes that go great together.
Doctor Strange #177 – This Colan/Palmer body of work is vastly underrated.
Captain America #117 – Gotta love the Falcon!
Howard the Duck Treasury Edition – the Defenders, the Duck … this one definitely jumped off the rack.
Tomb of Dracula #70 – nice way to end the best comics series of the 1970s.
Avengers #63 – loved that Goliath costume, even though Gene wasn’t crazy about drawing all those heroes.
Daredevil #44 – Gene and Steranko? Sign me up.
That’s Tom’s list…we love to share yours! Simply contact us with your list!
