A lot of people forget (or do not know) that the great JC Leyendecker did a goodly bit of pin-up work. One could even argue that his long running advertising campaign for Arrow was one long series of elegant male pin-ups.

Leyendecker is arguably the greatest American illustrator of the 20th century, and his use of brush strokes in a manner resembling the way many people draw with hatching has influenced innumerable artists, starting with Norman Rockwell.

He’s also largely responsible for how we all envision Santa Claus.
